Custom Coffee Table

Objective: To create a custom coffee table out of White Oak using the line pattern from the Credenza for the client's condo in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Requirements:

  • Made out of White Oak
  • Length: 42", Depth: 21", Gap between 6"
  • 8" hairpin legs

Process:

After glueing up the panels, it's time to design the dovetail joinery and lines for the sides in the CNC design software VCarve Pro. Once that is done I can put the panels on CNC machine and it will cut away the majority of the waste in the dovetail joints and to cut the line design in the sides.

Then it's back to hand chisels to clean up each element of the joinery:

Once everything has been cleaned up, it's time to do some fitting and adjusting and fitting and adjusting, ... until it's just right:

Once I know it will go together the way it's supposed to, it's time to glue it up. It's always a bit stressfull because the glue dries fast and there is a lot of surface to cover with a bit of glue. If you don't move fast enough, you can't slide the pieces into position anymore :-). But as you can see, that didn't happen :-)

Once the glue has set overnight, it's time to take it out of the clamps, and start sanding. After the sanding, I spray everything with water and let it dry, it raises the grain and then I send everything again. Then it's time to put the finish on. I use my home made woodbutter:
